The Anioma nation has decided to cancel the annual Anioma Cultural Festival for 2024 as a mark of respect for the departed Anioma monarchs, the Asagba of Asaba, Obi (Prof.) Chike Edozien, and Omu Martha Dunkwu.
The president of the Organisation For the Advancement of Anioma Culture (OFAAC), Mr. Kester Ifeadi, announced this decision on Wednesday.
Mr. Ifeadi explained that the cancellation is a gesture of respect for the late monarchs who played significant roles in uniting the nine local government areas of Delta North by hosting the annual cultural festival.
He emphasized, “At this period when the burial rites of passage are still on, it will be most insensitive and lacking in honor to hold the annual cultural festival in his kingdom when we are still mourning.”
The cancellation of the festival for 2024 is seen as a one-time response to the current circumstances, and Mr. Ifeadi assured that the festival would return stronger in 2025.
Speaking on the impact of the deceased monarchs, the Obi of Ubulu-Unor, Obi Henry Kikachukwu, highlighted their contributions to promoting and preserving the Anioma cultural heritage.
Similarly, Vice President of OFAAC, Mr. Patrick Ugboh, praised the late monarchs for their support and influence in advancing Anioma culture.
He noted, “His influence opened doors for OFAAC; likewise, the Omu, who was also knowledgeable, brought glamour and prestige to the Omu traditional stool.”
