The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended the Caretaker Chairmen of Khana Local Government, Mr. Derick Mene, Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Mr. Flag Ojukaye Amachree and Ahoada East Local Government Area, Mr. Cassidy Ikegbidi.
The suspension followed a motion presented by the Deputy Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Ewor Nname Robinson representing Ahoada East Constituency 1, on insecurity and financial mismanagement in the State.
Hon. Ewor said that section seven and eight of the 1999 constitution off Nigeria empower the State House of Assemblies to make law for structure, composition, Finance and functions of Local Government Council in the State.
The Deputy Leader further maintained that the Local Government Chairmen who are expected to quarrantee the protection of lives and properties of the citizens in their councils has failed to do so, instead human lives have been rendered insignificant and financial frugality has been jettisoned to the waste bin, adding that Local Government Areas are drifting to the Hobbesian State of nature.
Hon. Ewor therefore pray the House to suspend the Chairman of the affected councils and to set up an adhoc committee to investigate their activities.
Ruling on the matter, the Deputy Speaker Hon. Leyii Kwane who presided over the 169th plenary section of the 7th Assembly divided the House and members present voted in favour of the prayers and the affected Chairmen were consequently suspended by the House.
