Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, has raised concerns over the state of the opposition party, attributing its challenges to selfish interests within its ranks.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Thursday to mark his 79th birthday, George called on PDP members and leaders to use the forthcoming National Convention as an opportunity to rescue the party from its current struggles.
The elder statesman expressed disappointment in some party members who he described as “desperados” working against unity and the collective interest of the PDP.
He lamented that the party’s founding fathers, many of whom have passed away, would be disheartened by the current state of the party, which he said has been undermined by selfish agendas.
“It is disheartening and pitiable that some pretentious members are already working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections,” George said.
Reaffirming his loyalty to the PDP since its inception, George added:
“Even as elders of the party are preparing to meet on November 28 in Abuja to chart the way forward, I owe it a duty to declare openly that all is not well with our party. In fact, our party is derailing.
“The crisis in our party has further complicated the present tragedy in the socio-economic indices of our dear nation. Our party is at the precipice of a dangerous looming crisis if critical issues are not urgently addressed.
“If the PDP must rescue Nigerians from the vicious grip of APC in 2027, this must be a major agenda during our NEC meeting in Abuja.”
George stressed that the PDP remains the only party capable of saving Nigeria but emphasized that unity and loyalty are critical to achieving that goal.
He called for the expulsion of disloyal members who, he said, use the party platform for personal gains.
According to George, disloyalty is a grave offence that must not be tolerated if the PDP hopes to reclaim its position as a leading political force in Nigeria.
