OTTAWA, Canada, April 18, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“Canada condemns the killing of innocent civilians seeking refuge from violence at the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South sudan (UNMISS) base.
“These cowardly attacks on defenseless civilians, including women and children, appear ethnically based. This causes us great concern, and we call on all parties to cease this violence immediately.
“Canada expects all parties to respect the UN Mission in South Sudan’s neutral role and facilitate its work on protecting civilians, conflict resolution and peace consolidation. We reiterate our support for UNMISS and its mission to protect those South Sudanese who have chosen to denounce violence.”
The Government of Canada advises against all travel to South Sudan, including to the border areas and Juba, due to the present high level of armed conflict and violent crime.
