Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has approved the sum of N250 million to clear the backlog of foreign scholarship obligations of the government in Russia, Malaysia and other parts of the world.
The approval came on the heels of a viral video by medical students from the state studying in Russia, who lamented that their stipends had not been paid in the last 14 months in addition with their tuition.
The state government only just recently offset its financial obligations to its students studying in the United Kingdom.
The governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, also ordered the immediate release of the sum.
He restated his administration’s commitment to the welfare of all Bayelsans under government scholarships.
He stressed that the state scholarships board had been mandated to hasten the remittance of the money to the students and the various institutions concerned.
He further urged the students to be patient promising that the money would be paid at the end of the month.
Gov. Dickson further regretted the undue delay in the remittance of funds to the students and blamed it on compulsory bank rules and bank procedures.
