ABUJA (Office of the First Lady Report) – The President of the Association of Spouses of Heads of Mission (ASOHOM), Mai Anh Shoji has praised the First Lady of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan for making indelible marks through her programmes in her efforts to protect children and elevate the status of women in Nigeria.
While speaking on behalf of the Association when members of ASOHOM paid her a courtesy call at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday June 12, 2014, Mai Anh Shoji said that history will remember Patience Jonathan as a true mother of Nigeria.
In her remarks at the occasion, the First Lady noted that her passion towards improving the welfare of women, children and the under-privileged are through the programmes of her two NGOs – ‘Women for Change and Development Initiative’ and ‘A. Aruera Reachout Foundation.’ She also enumerated some of her achievements as the current President of the African First Ladies Peace Mission. She urged ASOHOM members to feel at home in Nigeria, affirming that her doors are open at all times to support and cooperate with humanitarian and charitable programmes towards improving the welfare of women and children.
Speaking on the abduction of the Chibok School girls, the First Lady described as unfortunate the fact that the children are still in hostage. “As mothers, we are very much worried because what concerns one concerns the other. We are calling for the release of the girls by their captors and for their safe return,” she pointed. Patience Jonathan expressed appreciation to ASOHOM home governments for their support towards securing the release of the abducted school girls.
The First Lady also commended the Government of the Democratic People’s Republic of China for donating office equipment to the Secretariat of the African First Ladies Peace Mission, assuring that as President of the Organization, she would continue to advocate for peace in the African region and other regions of the world.
