(Education Ministry Reports) – The Supervising Minister of Education, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has commended teachers for their immense contributions to nation building and development, while urging them to seek ways of addressing the poor reading and comprehension competencies of learners in the educational system.
The Minister stated this when he declared open a capacity building workshop organised by the Federal Ministry of Education for ‘Reading Teachers’ in Secondary Schools in Abuja Municipal Area Council recently.
The Minister, who was represented by the Director of Educational Planning, Research and Development, Bridget Okpa noted that poor reading and comprehension competencies of learners have greatly contributed to low grades and consequently the seemingly falling standard of education in the country which the workshop sought to address.
He averred that the falling standard of education in Nigeria has become a topical issue of national dimension; saying it is in recognition of the importance of reading that the Federal Ministry of Education has accorded the “Read Campaign” a central place to chart the course of reading and inculcating reading culture among Nigerians.
In his goodwill message, the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board in the FCT, represented by Iyela M. M commended the Ministry’s efforts towards resuscitating the reading culture. He added that the growing poor reading habit in the education system has been traced to the prevalence of poor reading foundation at the primary and secondary school levels of the education system, noting that the workshop for teachers has come at the right time.
