Executive Director, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth (ERA /FoEN) Dr. Godwin Uyi Ojo has advised the federal government to focus on investment in renewable energy research, green technology, subsidies and zero tarrifs to promote non-grid clean energy systems.
Ojo gave the advice weekend in Benin City at the 5th Renewable Energy Workshop. He said the call has become necessary because the recent Inter-government Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 5th Assessment report emphasised that climate change impacts would likely increase due to anthropogenic causes releasing Greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere which in turn will lead to rising global temperatures, extreme weather conditions such as sea level rise, hurricanes, flooding and heat-waves that have caused tens of thousands of lives and destruction of traditional livelihood sources.
He explained that ecological problems would likely be occurring at greater frequency and intensity unleashing catastrophic impact, unless mitigation and adaptation measures are taken to reduced the impact.
One of the consequences , he noted was that farmers in Nigeria would no longer be able to predict accurately planting seasons due to changes in weather pattern in terms of seasonal and rainfall variability.
