Former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, has refuted claims that he used state government funds to pay $720,000 for his children’s school fees.
His denial comes in response to statements made by the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, alleging the withdrawal of $720,000 from the state’s coffers for this purpose.
In a statement issued by his Media Officer, Ohiare Michael, Bello clarified that his children had been attending the American International School, Abuja, before his tenure as governor, and he had been paying their fees as required.
The statement, titled “Payment for school fees: Setting the records straight,” emphasized that Bello did not pay $720,000 or $840,000, as claimed, and the fees were not paid with Kogi State Government funds.
It also highlighted that the payment of the fees began in 2021, not as the EFCC chairman had suggested.
The statement concluded by asserting that the EFCC did not recover any money belonging to Bello or his family members.
