The American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) has called on governors from the South-East to take decisive action toward securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In an open letter signed by AVID President Sylvester Onyia and Secretary Godson Obiagwu, the group urged the governors to engage President Bola Tinubu to facilitate Kanu’s release before Christmas, dismissing fears that his freedom might threaten their political ambitions.
Assurances on Kanu’s Release

AVID assured the governors that releasing Kanu would not jeopardize their aspirations for the vice presidency in 2027, contrary to speculations. The group described such fears as unfounded, emphasizing that Kanu’s focus remains apolitical.
“If it is true, as we have been told, that some South-East politicians, particularly one of the governors, are blocking the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu because of fear that he might scuttle their ambition to become Vice President of Nigeria in 2027 or beyond, we say to such politicians that a free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will have neither the motivation nor the interest to block the ambition of any Igbo aspiring for that position,” the letter stated.
Accusations of Complicity
AVID warned that any further delay in securing Kanu’s release could be perceived as evidence of complicity by South-East leaders in his prolonged incarceration.
The group expressed concern over speculations that the Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, has been reluctant to join the push for Kanu’s release.
Impact on Regional Security
AVID noted that Kanu’s continued detention has contributed to insecurity and tension in the South-East, urging leaders to act swiftly to address the situation.
The group concluded by reiterating its commitment to ensuring Kanu’s release and reducing tensions in the region, while calling on South-East leaders to prioritize justice and unity over political calculations.
