The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has admitted that a technical issue affected the smooth operation of its Result Viewing Portal, IReV, during the 2023 presidential election.
This acknowledgment was made by INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakub in the foreword of the commission’s report detailing the activities leading up to and during the general election.
According to Prof. Yakub, the glitch was a result of the complex and sensitive nature of the systems involved, compounded by the genuine threat of cyberattacks.

Despite this setback, the commission’s early and meticulous planning ensured the overall success of the election process, in line with its practice since 2010.
The IReV portal was a significant innovation introduced by INEC before the 2023 general elections to enhance the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.
The portal, a public-facing website, displays images of the original polling unit result sheets as recorded in Form EC8A.
The 526-page report, published on the commission’s website, highlighted the challenge faced during the uploading of presidential election results on the IReV portal after the polls.
As polling officers (POs) attempted to upload result sheet images around 4:00 pm on February 25, 2023, reports emerged of failures in uploading presidential election result sheets.
In response, INEC immediately engaged with its field officials to investigate the issue and find solutions to ensure the integrity of the result management process.
Despite this setback, INEC’s efforts underscore its commitment to transparency and the integrity of the electoral process.
