In November 2015, 30 years after he instituted a suit against African Songs and its subsidiary, Juju maestro, King Sunny Ade was awarded a whopping N500m as damages for infringement on his works, with an additional N3m for prosecuting the suit in a judgement delivered by Justice Dosunmu of a Lagos High Court.
However, till this minute, King Sunny Ade is yet to redeem the claims.
In a chat in Lagos, KSA, who is making plans to celebrate his 70th birthday in a grand style said, ‘yes the case was won by me by God’s grace and they were told to pay me almost half a billion naira, they are yet to do that and the next thing I saw is an appeal from them, so I can’t say more than that for now’.
At the time the judgement was delivered, entertainment lawyer, Efe Ugboro, told TheNETng that the defendants may opt for an appeal.
In her words, ‘In this case, the defendants either pay up or they can appeal. They have the right to appeal up to the Supreme Court if they are unsatisfied with the judgement. This could take a few more years’.
