(Report from Federal Ministry of Special Duties)-The Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has declared that the Local Government administration is the key to Nigerian national development.
Turaki made this declaration in his office recently while receiving the report from Barrister Umaru Ambursa-led Presidential Committee on the review of Local Government Scheme of Service, set up in April, 2014. He said the Chairman and indeed members of the committee have remained undaunted to working day and night and to produce the report they have now is a feat that has to be commended.
The Minister stressed that the Federal Government, under the leadership of Goodluck Jonathan, is not only alive to its responsibilities, but will ensure that necessary reforms are brought about in every sector of human endeavour in this country, in such a way and manner as to ensure that strong pedestals have been built for institutional growth and development in virtually every sector; the kind of development and growth that will permeate from top to the bottom.
While presenting the committee’s report to the Minister, the Chairman, Umaru Ambursa said, the review committee was guided by the inputs of the stakeholders as contained in their submissions and that the exercise took cognizance of some inadequacies of the current edition and addressed them.
Highlight of the committee’s report include expansion of Health Educator Cadre; raising of the entry point of both the Veterinary and Medical Doctors from grade level 09 and grade level 12; creation of two new departments, namely the Environment Health Department out of the Primary Health Care Department and Revenue Department out of the Finance and Supplies Department and additional creation of Procurement Officer cadre; Tourism Officer cadre; Executive Officer (Lands) and Environmental Health Technologist cadre.
