Leroy Sane is determined to crank up the pressure on Liverpool after his winning goal brought Manchester City to within four points of the Premier League leaders.
The Germany winger’s 72nd-minute strike secured a 2-1 win over Liverpool on Thursday night and said Jurgen Klopp’s side will be feeling the threat from the champions as well as the added stress of trying to end a 29-year wait for a league title.
“We have put more pressure on Liverpool,” Sane told reporters. “We’re just four points behind them, and they know it, too.
“They have to keep up, but we also have to keep up. It’s now a little bit more interesting. It was really important to win a game at home against Liverpool. It gives you more confidence to know we are closer and it’s not over already.”
“It was one of the biggest performances since I came here,” he added. “Liverpool are, at the moment, maybe the best team in Europe, or the world, so we were happy we could beat them.
“We ran a lot and wanted to fight. We wanted to win the duels — if you don’t win the duels against Liverpool, they create chances. You could see that, especially in the first half, we won a lot of duels, and important duels, too.
“We need to keep playing the way we play, and we did that, but the way we ran and fought was a little bit special.
“You need the confidence to play like this. Every team studies how we play, especially in the Premier League and we know how difficult it is to play this way. This is our way and we want to show we can do it both ways.”
“We are always going to fight until the end, it doesn’t matter what the result is,” he said. “We always want to score, to show who we are and how we play.
“We ran a lot and fought a lot and everyone could see how much we wanted to win the game.
“It was really tense. You could see in every tackle, every pass, that everyone was really focused on the game, to not make mistakes, as we all know how difficult it is to play against big teams with big players. One wrong pass, one mistake, and you get really punished.
“I was really happy that the ball went in but much more happy that we won the game.”
