Amralah will have slightly longer odds than he perhaps deserves, and the Irish-bred horse will be well-backed regardless of the 3 kg penalty he will accrue as a result of his win at the Herbert Power event earlier this month. He struggles slightly over longer distances, but would be well-worth an each-way punt – just so long as he gets a good start.

Gust Of Wind impressed at this year’s Caulfield Cup, when he finished fourth, and also beat Winx (the Cox Plate-winner) at the Group One ATC Oaks, but his failure to place at four previous Melbourne Cups will see bookies running for cover. Meanwhile, Quest For More offers excellent value despite his woeful display at the Geelong Cup when he came home in a pitiful sixteenth place. He has already beaten Trip To Paris and Max Dynamite this year and could well secure a top-four finish, provided he gets a good start.
