Delta State Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Charles Ajuyah (SAN) said the Ministry has recorded remarkable achievement in areas of criminal Justice in the State in the foregoing year, saying it was a period that brought kidnappers to a halt in the State.
Ajuyah stated this when he led the management Staff of the Ministry before the House of Assembly Committee on Rules, Business, Legal and Judicial Matters chaired by Hon. Rufus Akpodiete to defend the proposed budget of the Ministry in 2014 fiscal year in the Assembly Complex.
He said remarkable number of armed robbers and kidnappers were prosecuted and sentenced to various degrees of offences in 2013, saying a large number are still awaiting trial in the law court.
The Commissioner who led the officials of the State High Courts, Customary Court of Appeal and Judicial Service Commission to defend their respective proposed budgets, said the Ministry of Justice is well positioned to prosecute armed robbers and kidnappers.
Ajuyah said the Ministry has also provided a legal framework to boost the internally generated revenue (IGR) of the State Government through the establishment of Revenue Courts to prosecute defaulters in the payment of ground rent to the State.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon Rufus Akpodiete, reminded the Commissioner and Officials of other Judicial institutions to tailor their policy thrust in line with Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan’s theme of finishing strong in 2015.
Hon. Akpodiete, who spoke alongside members of the Committee, tasked the agencies under the committee to focus their attention on completion of on-going projects in the State.
He particularly placed emphasis on the completion of the High Courts of Justice at Warri before the end of the present administration.
