The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has expressed its strong backing for the enforcement of third-party motor insurance in Nigeria, aiming to improve road safety and protect the interests of motorists and passengers. NAICOM’s support comes in response to ongoing concerns about the increasing number of road accidents and the lack of adequate insurance coverage for vehicles on the country’s roads.
Third-party motor insurance, which is mandatory under Nigerian law, provides coverage for damages caused by a vehicle to third parties, including other vehicles, property, and individuals. The enforcement of this law is seen as a crucial step in reducing the financial impact of road accidents and ensuring that victims receive compensation for damages and injuries sustained in accidents.
In a recent statement, NAICOM emphasized that enforcing third-party motor insurance is not only a legal requirement but also an essential measure for promoting road safety and protecting public health. The commission is advocating for stricter compliance with the law, with plans to work closely with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other regulatory bodies to ensure that all vehicles on the road are insured.

“The enforcement of third-party motor insurance is critical to ensuring that road users are protected in the event of an accident. It is also an important step in creating a safer road environment, as it ensures that those who cause accidents are held accountable for the damage they cause,” said a NAICOM spokesperson.
The implementation of stricter enforcement measures is expected to have several benefits, including reducing the number of uninsured vehicles on Nigerian roads, improving compensation for accident victims, and encouraging responsible driving. By ensuring that all vehicles have the necessary coverage, NAICOM aims to reduce the financial burden on accident victims who often struggle to receive compensation due to the lack of insurance.
The commission is also working to raise public awareness about the importance of third-party insurance and the consequences of non-compliance. NAICOM plans to launch educational campaigns and collaborate with insurance companies to make the process of obtaining and renewing insurance policies easier for motorists.
In addition to its focus on enforcement, NAICOM is exploring ways to improve the efficiency of the claims process and make insurance more accessible to all Nigerians. This includes exploring digital platforms and partnerships with financial institutions to make insurance policies more affordable and easier to purchase.
As the country continues to grapple with road safety challenges, NAICOM’s push for stronger enforcement of third-party motor insurance is a vital step toward ensuring greater protection for road users. With improved compliance and coverage, the initiative is expected to contribute to a more secure and responsible driving culture in Nigeria.
