The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its nationwide crackdown on illicit drug activities, arresting several suspects including an 80-year-old ex-convict in Kaduna State.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the octogenarian, identified as Ayuba Ashiru, was apprehended on May 14, 2025, at Barazana Street in the Dogarawa area of Sabon Gari Local Government Area.
The agency disclosed that operatives, acting on credible intelligence, raided the suspect’s residence and recovered 2.3 kilograms of skunk — a highly potent strain of cannabis — concealed in nylon and paper wraps, and prepared for street-level sale.

“He claimed to have been in the illicit drug trade for the past 46 years,” Babafemi stated, highlighting the suspect’s deep-rooted involvement in narcotics trafficking.
Further investigations revealed that Ashiru had previously been convicted for similar offences and served a 10-year jail term between 2014 and 2024.
The arrest is part of NDLEA’s ongoing operations targeting drug traffickers and distributors across various states as the agency intensifies efforts to combat the growing menace of substance abuse and narcotics distribution in Nigeria.
