In a significant move to curb criminal activities and uphold security in the Niger Delta region, the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, based in Port Harcourt, revealed that it successfully destroyed 233 illegal refineries during its “Operation Still Waters 3” in 2023. The operation spanned across Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta, and Rivers States.
The disclosure came from Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdulsalam, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6 Division, during the sidelines of the 2023 West African Social Activities celebration in Port Harcourt on Monday. Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam shared that the division achieved notable milestones during the scheduled exercises in 2023, with “Exercise Still Waters 3” playing a pivotal role in curbing criminal activities and heinous crimes in the region.
Highlighting the success of the operation, Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam provided detailed statistics, stating, “Throughout the exercise, we were able to make 1,112 arrests; destroyed 233 illegal refineries, and seized 1,111,900 million liters of illegally refined petroleum products.” Additionally, the troops impounded 72 trucks and other vehicles and recovered over 356 arms and ammunitions during the period.

The GOC emphasized the Army’s commitment to building on these achievements, stating, “We must ensure zero tolerance for oil theft and activities that will affect peace and stability across the Niger Delta and the country.” He further assured that the Nigerian Army would persist in its constitutional roles to defend democratic values, relentlessly pursuing criminals until justice was served.
Looking ahead, Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam outlined the Army’s objectives for 2024, expressing determination to achieve zero tolerance for oil theft. He stated, “We will not rest, and we will continue to go after criminals who attack us until we get them and make them pay a higher price for their crimes.”
In addition to the focus on security, Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam extended assurance that the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, would take necessary measures to ensure an increase in crude oil output in 2024.
