Former United States Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, has emerged victorious over Donald Trump in the Republican primary in Washington, DC.
Despite losing in her home state of South Carolina, Haley’s win in Washington, DC, marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first woman to win a Republican primary in US history.
While Haley secured 62.9% of the vote in Washington, DC, Trump garnered 33.2%.
However, Trump maintains a substantial lead over Haley nationwide, with 247 delegates compared to her 43.
The victory in Washington, DC, is largely symbolic, given the city’s strong Democratic leanings, with only about 23,000 registered Republicans.
Nonetheless, Haley’s campaign sees it as a rejection of Trump’s leadership, with her national spokesperson, Olivia Perez-Cubas, stating, “It’s not surprising that Republicans closest to Washington dysfunction are rejecting Donald Trump and all his chaos.”
Trump has been dominant in the Republican campaign, winning every state primary or caucus so far.
The upcoming Super Tuesday will further solidify his lead, with voters in 15 states and one US territory participating, offering a total of 874 Republican delegates.
