The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to ensure that local government allocations are paid directly, in line with the Supreme Court judgment mandating local governments to open accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, made the call on Sunday during the 8th National Administrative Council meeting of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Abuja.
He urged both the government and state governors not to politicize the implementation of the court ruling.

“We have got autonomy now. I want to plead with the federal government not to play politics with the autonomy we have gotten.
The release of funds to local governments should not be at the whims and caprices of the government,” Ajaero stated.
He emphasized that compliance with the ruling is a legal obligation, not a discretionary act.
“The moment the highest court in the land gave that ruling, they are not doing anybody any favor any longer. Even the President agrees with it. So I don’t understand the delays any longer,” he added.
Ajaero reaffirmed the NLC’s commitment to working alongside NULGE and other trade unions to ensure full compliance with the judgment, warning against any infractions at any level of government.
He also commended past leaders of NULGE for their dedication to the union’s progress and advised the new leadership to uphold democratic values and smooth leadership transitions.
