As a demonstration of its belief that a healthy populace is a great asset and tool required for driving socio-economic advancement, the Ogun State Government will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to provide meaningful healthcare delivery services to the people.
Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mrs. Oluwande Muoyo gave this assurance in Abeokuta while flagging-off a 2-day training programme on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for Village Health Workers drawn from four Local Government Areas of the State.
Muoyo, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Abayomi Sobande noted that the State government had committed huge resources to implementing MDGs projects, particularly hospitals equipped with modern facilities to provide health care services, adding that the 2-day programme was another intervention to reduce maternal and infant mortality in the State.
The Commissioner however said the resources expended on the facilities could be justified only if the people they were provided for make good use of them.
She therefore tasked the participating Village Health Workers to go all out and help sensitise residents, particularly those living in the rural communities on the availability of such facilities.
“The Village Health Workers are the closest to rural dwellers, they are the links, they understand them better, I believe with this training, they would be able to embark on house-to-house sensitization, engage in promotional activities on the need to make use of facilities provided, thereby helping to improve healthy living and reduce infant and maternal mortality” Muoyo noted.
In his remarks, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Bashorun Muyiwa Oladipo, represented by an official of the Ministry, Mr. Gbadegesin Yusuf said regular training of health workers was necessary to ensure that government’s vision on the mission to rebuild, particularly on providing affordable healthcare delivery was achieved.
He therefore enjoined the 52 participants drawn from Ado/Odo Ota, Obafemi Owode, Ogun Waterside and Ewekoro Local Government Areas to make effective use of the training to justify huge investments of government on health care services.
Later in an interview, representative of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on MDGs, Mr. Adeyemi Adewunmi disclosed that after the training, participants expected to be mobilizing residents on the availability of health facilities would be paid stipends and provided with kits to carry out their functions effectively.
