Samuel Ortom, the immediate past Governor of Benue State, has commended the Senate for its resolution reached on Friday concerning the dissolution of democratically elected local government councils in the state.
The Senate, in response to a motion titled “Urgent Need to Halt the Erosion of Democracy: The Dissolution of Elected Councils in Benue State,” sponsored by Senator Abah Moro, urged the Federal Government to suspend statutory allocations to local government councils without democratically elected executives and councilors.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his media aide, Terver Akase, Ortom expressed appreciation for the Senate’s intervention, describing it as a significant move that demonstrates a commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring the autonomy of local government administration nationwide.

Ortom emphasized that the Senate’s unanimous resolution represents a crucial step in safeguarding the democratic process at the grassroots level, viewing it as a proactive measure to deter actions undermining citizens’ democratic rights and the principles of good governance.
The former Benue Governor specifically lauded Senator Abba Moro for his proactive motion, acknowledging its role in urgently addressing the issue of the unconstitutional removal of local government councils in Benue State.
Ortom praised the Senate’s firm stance against dictatorial tendencies, particularly by calling for the withholding of statutory allocations to non-democratically elected local government councils.
