A fatal road accident on Wednesday in Ebonyi State claimed the life of a prospective member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and left several others injured.
The deceased, a female corps member, was among 12 prospective corps members traveling in a 14-seater bus en route to the NYSC orientation camp in Afikpo, Afikpo Local Government Area, for their three-week orientation course as part of the 2024 Batch C Stream II.
The accident occurred when the Enugu North Mass Transit bus reportedly rammed into a parked truck in Amenu village, Okposi, along the Amasiri-Okigwe route.

Eyewitnesses said the impact of the crash left the bus mangled.
Local residents and security agencies rescued the injured passengers and rushed them to the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), where they are receiving treatment.
A source at the scene said, “The bus had 12 corps members, and the accident happened in Amenu community, Okposi. Sadly, a female corps member died, while others sustained injuries.”
At the hospital, a staff member confirmed the arrival of the victims. “Yes, they were brought here by security officials. They are responding to treatment,” the source added.
FRSC Confirms Accident
The Ebonyi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Igwe Henry, confirmed the incident but stated that his officers arrived after the victims had been rescued.
“The accident happened on January 22 at about 14:00 hours along the Amasiri-Okigwe route in Amenu village, Okposi,” Igwe said.
He identified the vehicles involved as a grey Toyota commercial bus and a Mercedes-Benz tipper truck. Preliminary investigations suggest excessive speed on the part of the bus may have caused the crash.
“By the time our men from the Amasiri Unit Command got to the scene, the victims had already been rescued and taken to David Umahi Hospital in Uburu. Items recovered from the scene are in the custody of a local chief,” he added.
NYSC Reacts
The Ebonyi State Coordinator of the NYSC, Foluke Oladeinde, confirmed the incident but was too shaken to provide details.
“I’m currently in the hospital and not in the right frame of mind to talk. Yes, the accident happened, but I can’t give further details at the moment,” she said.
The incident has raised concerns over road safety as corps members embark on journeys to fulfill their national service obligations. Further investigations are ongoing.
