Public servants in the Office of the Surveyor -General of the Federation (OSGOF) have been adjoined to shun corruption and its tendencies through adherence to the ethics of the service for positive development in the nation.
The Surveyor-General of the Federation, Peter Chigozie Nwilo stated this when he welcomed the resource persons from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other- related Crimes Commission (ICPC) who visited the OSGOF for an enlightenment campaign organized by the Anti- Corruption and Transparency Unit of the OSGOF in Abuja recently. He also thanked the ICPC officers for enlightening the staff.
While briefing on the effects of corruption on a country, the Desk Officer in the ICPC, Musa Ibrahim Alkali said that corruption is a crime against the poor, indicating that he is at the receiving end of the impacts. He further pointed out that corruption impacts on political devices as well as people’s participation, breeds poverty, increases the cost of goods and services, destroys the image of Nigeria and can cause under-development amongst others.
He reiterated that sanctions exist for erring officers and admonished them to be wary and work to the rules. He said that making false statements or returns in respect of money or property received attracts seven years imprisonment. On fraudulent acquisition of property and bribery in relation to auction transactions, he explained that it attracts seven years and three years respectively.
Musa Ibrahim Alkali called on the officers to report cases of corrupt practices to the Chairman of ICPC stating the facts for proper investigation. He observed that public servants need to retract to good ethical standard and promote reward for hard work.
