When asked if the 30-year-old and the Three Lions record scorer with 50 strikes was still the country’s best hitman. Jones said: “We have a lot of good strikers. You cannot pinpoint a specific striker as who is the best, but he is up there.”
Jones did add: “There has been a lot of speculation about him but he is Manchester United’s captain, England’s captain, the all-time scoring record holder and it speaks for itself.
“He is tough in training. Wayne is Wayne. He is a finisher, talker, scorer, leader and is aggressive. You need those players in your team.” With England facing Spain in a friendly on Friday, Jones confessed he probably would have clobbered Diego Costa in his youth if the striker had tried any of tricks on him.
Jones could go up against the volatile Brazil-born Costa, who elected to play for Spain, in Alicante.
“When I was younger and growing up, even in training if someone stuck one on me, even by accident, I would go after them,” said Jones.
