The Rivers State Government says it has consistently provided insecticide treated mosquito nets in a bid to reduce the malaria burden of Rivers People.
Health Commissioner Dr. Tamunoiyoriari Parker stated this during the flag-off ceremony for the 2014 Long Lasting Net replacement campaign in Port Harcourt.
Represented by the Director Public Health in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Nnanna Onyekwere, the Commissioner said the aim of the campaign is to ensure continues coverage of the Roll Back Malaria Programme.
According to him, the campaign is being done in line with recommendations and standard of the World health Organization (WHO) and other international Agencies adding that over three million nets will be given out this year.
He urged beneficiaries to effectively use the Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets given to them that malaria has been a major cause of death in Sub-Saharan Africa especially among pregnant women and children as well as the major cause of infant morbidity and mortality.
High point of the programme was the pronouncement of Dame Judith Amaechi, wife of the State Governor as a National Net Ambassador for her contributions to the fight against malaria in the State.
