SANTA CLARA, CA–(Marketwired – Aug 6, 2014) – Flash Memory Summit 2014 — The Flash Memory Summit has chosen the SNIA NVM Programming Model as a Best of Show award winner for Most Innovative Flash Memory Enterprise Business Application. The annual Best of Show awards are the premier opportunity for industry recognition of innovative products and solutions, and how they are being used in the marketplace.

The SNIA NVM Programming Model defines new software programming models for non-volatile memory (NVM) and will be a key contributor to an expected convergence, made possible by NVM, of system memory and storage into a single, unified “persistent memory” entity.

The technology that motivates this model includes SSDs as well as other NVM devices which can be addressed as memory. The NVM Programming Model defines software behavior for block-addressable NVM (SSDs) and byte-addressable NVM (certain NVDIMMs). The NVM Programming Model also describes extensions allowing software to utilize NVM, and enables designers to develop APIs that take advantage of NVM features and performance. Thirty-two companies have been working on the NVM Programming Model since 2012. These companies represent solid state storage industry-leading manufacturers, system software manufacturers, computer system OEMs, controller makers, and test labs.

“Flash memory technology is currently experiencing a progression of innovations that can make a real difference in solving storage solution challenges. The industry is seeing a proliferation of new Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) functionality and new NVM technologies,” said Jay Kramer, Chairman of the Flash Memory Summit Awards Program and President of Network Storage Advisors Inc. “We are proud to select the SNIA NVM Programming Model for the Best of Show Award as it brings to the marketplace a new standard with a model that defines recommended behavior between various user spaces and operating system (OS) kernel components supporting NVM.”

“It is a great honor for the NVM Programming Model Technical Working Group of SNIA to be recognized for their work,” said Doug Voigt, Co-chair of the SNIA NVM Programming Technical Work Group from HP. “It is especially encouraging that the industry recognizes the importance of the changes taking place in the non-volatile memory field. This is a huge opportunity for vendor-neutral work in groups like the SNIA to impact technology adoption and market growth.”

“We’re thrilled with this recognition of the SNIA NVM Programming Model and the role of software in emerging NVM solutions. A goal for contributors to the programming model is industry alignment around NVM-related software behavior; in particular, interoperable approaches for application use of NVM features. Recognition from the Flash Memory Summit demonstrates industry support for this goal,” said Paul von Behren of Intel, Co-chair of the SNIA NVM Programming Technical Work Group.

Winning products were judged by a panel of industry experts who evaluated each nomination according to the following criteria:

    • Distinctiveness of the application, technology, or product
    • Central use of flash memory as a solution or innovation
    • Technical and business significance to the general marketplace
