The need for Geo-information products for use as essential ingredients to infrastructural development has been stressed. The Surveyor-General of the Federation (SGOF), Prof. Peter Nwilo said, the office is seeking for partnership from various agencies to improve service delivery nationwide in the area of infrastructural development and crime prevention.
The SGOF made this appeal at a press briefing in Abuja recently.
He pointed out that the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF) is responsible for undertaking vital surveys and provision of geospatial data required for planning and development, adding that it generates plants for the exploitation and management of minerals and other natural resources.
Nwilo said that for Nigeria to get it right in most infrastructural work, such data will be required; he said “80% of activities done on the surface of the earth need the products.”
The SGOF said that products available at OSGOF are Topographic Maps at 1/25,000, 1/50,000 and 1/100,000; Township maps for States and Capitals at 1/10,000 and 1/2000. He said, OSGOF has 2.5m Orthophoto imageries covering the entire country, Right of way Survey plans, National Road Maps, Tidal information to aid construction of bridges amongst others.
The Surveyor-General stressed that archived maps of former regions, provinces and divisions signed by Herbert Macaulay (the father of Nigerian nationalism) are available.
He added that watershed maps which can be very useful in managing erosion and flooding are also available; saying that imageries and aerial photographs available can assist in making informed decision on location and design of roads.
He said, as a provider of Geo-information products, the need for partnership with relevant agencies is vital, as doing so will lead to improved service delivery.
