Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly launched a violent attack on Mafa village in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State, looting and setting ablaze numerous homes and shops.
The incident, which took place around 4 pm on Sunday, has left the community in a state of shock and devastation, with authorities still working to confirm the number of casualties.
According to the Yobe State Police Command Spokesman, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the attackers, believed to be Boko Haram militants, stormed the village on more than 50 motorcycles, armed with rifles and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).
Their assault was characterised by indiscriminate looting and the burning of property, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
The police spokesman, speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, noted that the exact number of lives lost in the attack remains unconfirmed.
The incident was initially reported to the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Station by Babagana Goni and Bako Ibrahim, both residents of Mafa village.
They recounted the chaos that unfolded as the insurgents unleashed terror on their community, targeting not only homes but also shops and other structures essential to the local economy.
This attack is a grim reminder of the ongoing threat posed by Boko Haram in the region, despite ongoing military efforts to curb their activities.
DSP Abdulkarim elaborated on the scale of the attack, describing how the insurgents arrived on motorcycles, a common tactic used by Boko Haram to navigate the difficult terrain and launch surprise assaults on remote communities.
The use of RPGs and other heavy weaponry in the attack suggests a coordinated effort by the insurgents to inflict maximum damage and terror.
The assault has left many residents in fear for their safety, and the community is now grappling with the immediate aftermath of the attack, including the loss of property and lives.
The police spokesman also mentioned that in addition to the violence, the attackers left behind flyers with Arabic inscriptions.
The content and intent of these flyers remain unclear, but they could be an attempt by the insurgents to spread propaganda or issue threats to the local population.
This tactic of leaving behind written messages is not new; Boko Haram has previously used such methods to instil fear and assert their presence in attacked areas.
As of now, security forces have been deployed to Mafa and its surrounding areas to restore order and prevent further attacks.
The police, in collaboration with the military, are conducting patrols and engaging in intelligence-gathering efforts to track down the perpetrators.
Despite these measures, the challenge remains significant, as Boko Haram continues to adapt its tactics, often targeting soft and vulnerable communities far from major security installations.
The recent attack on Mafa village is part of a broader pattern of violence that has plagued Yobe State and the wider northeastern region of Nigeria for over a decade.
Boko Haram, whose name translates to “Western education is forbidden,” has been waging an insurgency since 2009, aiming to establish an Islamic state in the region.
The group’s activities have resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and the displacement of millions, creating one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
In response to the Mafa attack, community leaders and local authorities are calling for increased security measures to protect vulnerable villages.
They stress the need for a more robust military presence and improved coordination among security agencies to preempt such attacks.
There is also an urgent call for humanitarian assistance to support those who have lost their homes and livelihoods as a result of the violence.
Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has condemned the attack, expressing sympathy for the victims and pledging the government’s support in rebuilding the affected community.
He also reiterated his commitment to working with federal authorities to enhance security and ensure that the people of Yobe State can live in peace and safety.
As the investigation into the Mafa attack continues, the authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security post.
The resilience of communities like Mafa, coupled with sustained security efforts, will be crucial in overcoming the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram and other extremist groups in the region.
