A coalition of non-governmental organisations in Ogun and the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Center (WARDC) have described an attack by thugs on a Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital city, as an indication that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was not prepared for the general elections in 2015.
Speaking at a press conference held in Abeokuta, Executive Director of WARDC, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi said the lapses during the distribution of Voters’ card had shown that the electoral body was not prepared to conduct the 2015 polls.
Hoodlums, armed with guns and other dangerous, according to an eyewitness, had stormed the centre in Oke-Efon, Abeokuta North local government area of the state, and were said to have seriously injured about 10 persons. Residents on the queue at St. Mary African Church Primary School being attended to by officials of INEC had been attacked by the thugs.
The hoodlums were reported by Vanguard to have dispossessed residents caught in the violence of their mobile phones and cash, as a policeman attached to the centred fled.
The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Sam Olumekun confirmed the incident, describing it as skirmish. He however said it had been brought under control.
