Tragic Boat Mishap Claims Four Lives in Nasarawa State

A tragic boat accident in Lafia East Local Government Area of Nasarawa State claimed the lives of four individuals on Thursday, highlighting the critical need for better infrastructure in the region.

The victims, comprised of one man and three women, were farmers travelling from Alogani village to Ashangwa market when their overloaded boat capsized.

Eyewitness Abdul Hamid Sale, who witnessed the harrowing incident, described the tragedy as a needless loss of lives that could have been prevented.

Sale explained that the lack of adequate road networks forced the farmers to resort to the perilous boat journey across the local river.

The boat, which was carrying 25 passengers, four motorcycles, and four large bags of melon, was overloaded, a factor believed to have contributed to the fatal accident.

“If we had decent roads connecting our villages, no one would dare to use the boat, especially with so much cargo on board,” Sale lamented.

His account sheds light on the daily struggles faced by the rural communities in Lafia East, where inadequate infrastructure compels residents to take significant risks just to carry out routine economic activities such as going to the market.

He also revealed that experienced local fishermen have been deployed to help recover the remaining bodies and property from the scene.

As of now, the search and recovery efforts continue, with hopes that all missing persons and items will be found.
