Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan has commissioned a block of hostel built by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) with an assurance that President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, state Governors and stakeholders are working to create job opportunities for graduates.
The Governor who commissioned the hostel at the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State decried what job seekers experienced during the last recruitment exercise by the Nigeria Immigration Service, observing that it was a sad incident.
While noting that unemployed issue was a challenge all over the world, Governor Uduaghan emphasized that those in authority in the country were committed to creating job opportunities, asserting that job seekers would not gather at stadium again because of job interview.
He also stated that the hostel built and donated to the University by the NDDC was a clear sign that the lost glory of the University is being restored.
Dr Uduaghan used the occasion to charge students not to engage in cult related activities, stating that no cultist has ever made a First Class in the University.
He disclosed that funds have been released for scholarship programmes for Deltans who made First Class in the University, adding that funds have also been released for bursary for students.
The Governor urged students to be committed to their studies and shun anything that is inimical to the society and will affect their studies.
Earlier, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NDDC, Sir Bassey Dan-Abia had said the hostel was one out of the nineteen university hostel projects the Commission was executing across the nine states of the Niger Delta.
He noted that it is his firm belief and conviction that the provision of the 174-rooms, 696-bed spaces and state-of-the-art hostel, would have contributed immensely to easing the over-crowding of hostels witnessed by students in the ivory tower and increased the students’ access to decent accommodation in the university campus.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of University of Benin, Senator Effiong Dickson-Mbong observed that NDDC has fulfilled its mandate as an interventionist agency stating that they desired to make the school the best university in the world in terms of moral upbringing and physical infrastructure.
