SAN LEANDRO, CA–(Marketwired – October 22, 2014) – As part of the House Democrats’ “Make It In America” plan, House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D) joined Rep. Barbara Lee (D) for a tour of Silicon Valley’s The Gate. They witnessed the unique collaboration between artists, tech entrepreneurs, and makers to return manufacturing to the former Dodge Factory in San Leandro. The plan aims to increase the creation of manufacturing jobs in the United States.
Cheryl Edison, Ecosystem Developer, welcomed everyone to The Gate at the site of John Baden’s 50 ft. X 50 ft. “The Gate, Make it Here!” mural and explained that they would see “the remarkable transformation of a commercial property into a place where leaders of the artist, tech, and maker communities now thrive.” Their tour included a visit to Type A Machines, leading makers of 3D printers; Phase Space, specialists in motion-tracking technology; and The Hive large scale art collective.
Edison explained that The Gate’s success required a team effort, including the generosity of Pat Kennedy, who funded the fiber optic network in San Leandro, the steadfast work of the City of San Leandro’s Mayor Stephen Cassidy and Chief Innovation Officer Deb Acosta, forward-thinking action by property owners, SKB (ScanlanKemperBard) led by Sr. VP Stephen Wong, and the tireless work of the property management team led by David Holley, Janet Tudor and Dave Weaver, Sr.
During their visit, Hoyer and Lee also witnessed the launch of Bay Area Advanced Manufacturing (BAAM), founded by the CEO of Type A Machines, Espen Sivertsen at The Gate, now the world’s largest cluster of 3D printing-related products and services under one roof.
At the press conference, Congressman Hoyer stressed how pleased he was to “visit The Gate and learn about a dynamic community of innovators, manufacturers, and artists who are helping to maintain and expand America’s advanced manufacturing leadership”. Rep. Barbara Lee added that “the East Bay is leading the way in innovation and advanced manufacturing,” adding that, “The Gate and other East Bay manufacturers are proof that when companies ‘make it in America,’ working families ‘make it in America’ thanks to good-paying manufacturing jobs.”

ABOUT THE “MAKE IT IN AMERICA” PLAN
House Democrats’ “Make It In America” plan focuses on creating the best conditions for American businesses to manufacture their products, innovate, and create jobs here in the United States. The plan focuses on four key priorities that can bring about the changes needed to help businesses grow and create jobs here, and which are the most likely to draw bipartisan support. The four priorities include adopting and pursuing a national manufacturing strategy; promoting the export of U.S. goods; encouraging businesses to bring jobs and innovation back to the U.S.; and training and securing a twenty-first century workforce. To date, President Obama has signed eleven “Make It In America” bills into law, many of which passed Congress with bipartisan support.
