According to manager Louis van Gaal, Wayne Rooney is fit to return to Manchester United’s match day squad for Sunday’s trip to Southampton.
The England and club skipper has missed the Red Devils’s last two matches with an undisclosed injury problem.
The Dutch boss also disclosed that Phil Jones has returned to training after recovering from mild thrombosis.
“It was a minor injury you don’t want to take any risks,” Van Gaal said on Wayne Rooney. “Now he has had his treatment. I think he can start.”
The coach described Luke Shaw’s broken leg as a “big loss’ for United, but says he has been amazed by the left-back’s positive attitude.
Shaw had surgery in the Netherlands on Tuesday night after suffering double fracture of the right leg during the 2-1 defeat at PSV Eindhoven in the Uefa Champions League.
“I called him last evening,” Van Gaal said.” He sounds very strong. Amazing for me. Big surprise. A good thing.”
“Maybe he shall come back tomorrow. Then a long period of rehabilitaiton. Still a long way to go. I am always saying that it is not physical but also mental.”
