The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Yobe State has called for the cancellation of the June 2024 local government elections conducted by the State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC), citing alleged irregularities.
Speaking at a press briefing in Damaturu, the ADC’s Yobe State Chairman, Umar Kalli Alhaji, accused YSIEC of violating the 2022 Electoral Act by failing to notify political parties six months before the election.
Alhaji claimed the commission’s actions effectively barred the ADC from participating in the polls.

“It is important to know that ADC, as a registered political party, has not been properly informed by YSIEC about the local government election for the submission of candidates for the chairmanship and councillorship positions, which is a violation of the 2022 Electoral Act,” he stated.
The ADC chairman also revealed that the party had taken legal action, with a case pending at the high court challenging the electoral process in the state.
In response, YSIEC Chairman Mamman Mohammad denied knowledge of any legal case involving the ADC.
He maintained that the commission had followed due process, noting that the election date had been extended by two weeks to address any issues.
“During this period, the commission did not receive any complaints from the ADC indicating their unwillingness to participate in the election,” Mohammad said.
The June 2024 local government election in Yobe State saw the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) claim a landslide victory, winning all 17 local government chairmanship seats and 178 councillorship positions.
The ADC’s allegations and its pending court case have added a layer of controversy to the polls, raising questions about the transparency and inclusivity of the electoral process.
