(Report from Federal Ministry of Youth Development) Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Boni Haruna has disclosed that fire disaster prevention and safety awareness campaign can potentially prevent disasters, emphasizing that it is important for individual citizens and corporate organizations to key into the initiative.
He spoke when he received the Fire Disaster Prevention And Safety Awareness Association of Nigeria in his office. Mr. Haruna noted that individuals and corporate organizations must understand their roles in the task of preventing fire disasters. He observed that the notion of fire disaster being a problem for Government alone to tackle needs to change.
In continuing, Mr. Haruna welcomed the initiative of the Fire Disaster Prevention And Safety Awareness Association of Nigeria to mobilize the youths to join the vanguard for the realization of the initiative in the country. While praising the Association, the Minister underscored the importance of the partnership between that organization and the Ministry in raising awareness among the youths particularly among corps members; stating that the Ministry would thoroughly review and appraise the proposal in order to explore the possibility of including fire prevention and disaster module in the orientation programme for corps members.
He also noted that the initiative was in tandem with the overall Federal Government’s policy under the Transformation Agenda, to make the youths of Nigeria better citizens using the platform of the National Youth Service Scheme.
Meanwhile, the President of the Association, Alhaji Badanga Ahmed told the Minister that the Association was committed to raising the level of awareness about fire safety in the country from the present estimation of about 2% to 95% by the year 2020 taking a bottom-up approach based on careful and strategic planning. He therefore, stated that the NYSC was strategic to the organization’s plan to inculcate in the youths the culture of fire safety as part of our daily routine.
