Residents of the Mereri and Damba areas of Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, have voiced their anguish over persistent terrorist attacks, urging both federal and state governments to take immediate action to ensure their safety.
Addressing journalists in Gusau, Alhaji Mustapha Usman, a traditional leader from Damba, expressed frustration over the government’s inaction.
“Why should both the federal and state governments abandon us to the terrorists? We don’t sleep with our two eyes closed, as the bandits are ravaging seriously in these areas,” he said.

Usman described Damba and Mereri as hotbeds of banditry, where criminals operate freely without any challenge from security operatives.
He highlighted a recent incident where a reverend father was kidnapped, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
“Nigeria is jubilating that she is an independent country, yet we are facing a serious security challenge in Zamfara State,” he added.
Echoing similar sentiments, a leader from Mereri criticized the government’s failure to address the ongoing crisis.
“We voted for governments to help us solve this insecurity situation, but everyone pretends that nothing is going on in the state,” he lamented.
Residents have called on the authorities to address the root causes of the insecurity that has plagued Zamfara State for over a decade and take decisive steps to protect the communities.
