The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday refuted report that the Nigerian Embassy in Washington DC, was shut down by workers over non-payment of their salaries. The Ministry’s spokesperson, Clement Aduku, in a statement in Abuja said that though some junior workers were being owed salaries, the embassy was not shut down as reported. “The Ministry wishes to state that contrary to reports of shutdown, the embassy is functioning properly and discharging its statutory diplomatic and consular responsibilities,” he said. Over 50 suspected militants reportedly attacked officials of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state. The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 3, at Aridolf Aridolf Resort Wellness and Spa, The Cable reports. It was also learnt that the facility is owned by former first lady Patience Jonathan. According to the report, the FIRS team was at the facility to claim tax liabilities totaling N10,117,50 when they were attacked. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Nigeria’s foreign debt stood at 11.41 billion dollars while its domestic debts was N14.02 trillion respectively in 2016. The NBS stated in “Nigerian Domestic and Foreign Debt – 2016’’ data, posted on its website on Wednesday in Abuja, that the sum reflected the states’ and Federal debt stock.
