Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said he views Jesse Lingard as more of a central player than a wide man. Lingard impressed in the No. 10 role for Thursday night’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the Europa League and began Sunday’s 1-0 win over Manchester City in the central role, with Juan Mata moving out to the right. The 23-year-old performed well before being shifted out wide later in the match and when asked about the player’s fine showing in the centre after the game, Van Gaal said: “Yes, that is why I have put him there, but…

Meanwhile, Valencia boss Gary Neville was called a “donkey” and urged “to go now” by the club’s fans after losing 2-0 at home to Celta Vigo. Yet, Villarreal were more than worthy of a…
England assistant coach Gary Neville has delayed joining up with Roy Hodgson’s squad for this month’s friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands so he can focus on putting things right with his beleaguered Valencia team. I feel it’s the right thing to do,” Neville told…
Van Gaal said he did not know whether captain Wayne Rooney will be fit to return from his knee injury after the international break. But the United manager’s selection problems pale in comparison to those troubling his City counterpart Manuel Pellegrini, who lost winger Raheem Sterling to a groin problem and goalkeeper Joe Hart to a calf injury. Pellegrini estimated that both would be out for “three or four weeks”, which would rule them out of England’s forthcoming friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands and potentially next month’s two-legged Champions League quarterfinal against Paris Saint-Germain as well. City’s fourth defeat…

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes that his team have a “big chance” of finishing in the Premier League’s top four following their 1-0 win at Manchester City. United’s season looked to be on the rocks after they were knocked out of the Europa League by Liverpool last Thursday, but teenage striker Marcus Rashford’s clinically taken 16th-minute strike got them back on track at the Etihad Stadium in Sunday’s derby. As well as ending a run of four games without victory in all competitions, the result took United to within a point of City, who currently occupy the fourth…
At the other end of the table, Valencia remain just six points above the relegation after a third consecutive league defeat. The forceful reaction from the fans provoked a rethink from Neville over his initial decision to join up with the England squad in his role as an assistant coach to Roy Hodgson as he will now stay in Valencia until Thursday before meeting up with the national team. “Obviously it’s not an ideal situation,” said Neville. “I’m the assistant coach for the national team of England, with 60 million people, but I understand the two or three million people…
Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri once again played down his team’s Premier League title chances after their seventh win in nine games kept them five points clear of second-placed Tottenham after the latter’s win over Bournemouth on Sunday. For the Italian, “focus” continues to be the buzz word as one of the most open Premier League seasons in the recent past enters a potentially dynamic and dramatic final stretch. The 64-year-old manager underlined his side’s small-team tag and adhered to the cautious stance he has embraced right from the point underdogs Leicester jumped into the fray as title contenders. “There…
Jurgen Klopp refused to write off Liverpool’s hopes of forcing their way into the top four despite squandering a two-goal lead at Southampton. Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat meant they were unable to take advantage of Manchester City’s home loss to Manchester United and move to within four points of Manuel Pellegrini’s side who lie fourth having played a game more. But Klopp insists that with nine games remaining, his side can still challenge although he conceded they cannot afford a repeat of their second half performance at St Mary’s Stadium. “There are 27 points still to play for,” said the Liverpool…
