The Biden administration is taking steps to extend protections for hundreds of thousands of immigrants under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, according to reports by The New York Times.
The move is seen as a preemptive effort to counter former President Donald Trump’s plan for large-scale deportations if re-elected.
Trump, who has vowed to execute the largest deportation operation in U.S. history, has appointed key officials, including Rodney S. Scott and Caleb Vitello, to spearhead his immigration overhaul.
TPS currently provides temporary residency and work permits to over one million immigrants from 17 countries facing conflict or natural disasters.
Trump has previously criticized the Biden administration for its immigration policies, alleging they have compromised national security.
By extending TPS protections, Biden aims to strengthen the program and make it more challenging for a potential Trump administration to dismantle it.
