Cornerstone Insurance Plc has introduced a new voice-enabled capability for its artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistant, CiCi, in another step toward transforming customer service and making insurance products and services more accessible through digital technology.
The new Voicebot allows customers to communicate with CiCi using natural speech rather than relying solely on traditional text-based interactions. According to the insurer, the technology is designed to provide faster responses and a more convenient way for customers to obtain information and support across selected insurance journeys.

The development represents a further expansion of Cornerstone Insurance’s digital transformation strategy, as insurers increasingly explore artificial intelligence and automation to improve customer engagement and operational efficiency. CiCi’s new voice capability combines artificial intelligence, natural language processing and speech recognition technology to understand spoken requests and respond to customers in real time.
Jafar Elamah, Head of Digitisation and Projects at Cornerstone Insurance, said the company was continuously seeking innovative approaches to simplify insurance and make its services more accessible. He described the introduction of the Voicebot as another milestone in the company’s digital transformation journey, particularly in its efforts to provide faster responses, greater convenience and improved customer experience.
The Voicebot is currently focused on selected customer journeys rather than the full range of insurance services offered by the company. Among the functions currently supported are onboarding for investment-linked products and providing guidance relating to motor insurance claims.
Through the voice interface, customers can obtain product information, initiate selected onboarding processes and receive guidance on claims-related matters. The approach is intended to reduce the need for customers to navigate lengthy menu structures or depend entirely on conventional customer-service channels.
The move is significant for an insurance industry that has historically relied heavily on face-to-face interactions, telephone conversations, agents and conventional digital platforms to explain products and assist policyholders. By introducing conversational technology, insurers can potentially provide customers with another channel through which they can access information at their convenience.
For Cornerstone, the development builds on the earlier introduction of CiCi as an AI-powered virtual assistant. The company launched the upgraded assistant in 2025 as part of efforts to provide faster and more personalised interactions for customers and employees. At the time, the insurer said the technology was designed to move beyond the limitations of conventional chatbot systems by using generative AI and natural-language capabilities.
The addition of voice interaction extends that strategy by making the assistant more conversational and potentially easier to use for customers who may find text-based digital platforms less convenient. Voice technology can also reduce the number of steps involved in obtaining basic information, particularly where customers simply need guidance rather than a complex transaction.
The company expects the Voicebot to provide several operational benefits, including faster access to information, improved response times for selected enquiries and more consistent service through intelligent automation. Cornerstone also sees the technology as a tool for enhancing customer experience by making insurance services easier to access.
However, the effectiveness of such technology will ultimately depend on how accurately it understands customers, how well it handles different accents and speech patterns, and how seamlessly it transfers complex cases to human representatives when necessary. For an industry dealing with financial protection and claims, maintaining accuracy and customer confidence remains particularly important.
The development also highlights the broader role technology is beginning to play in Nigeria’s insurance industry. Insurers are increasingly investing in digital platforms, automated processes, data analytics and artificial intelligence as they seek to improve efficiency and reach a wider customer base.
For Nigeria, where insurance penetration remains a major growth opportunity, technology could provide insurers with additional channels for reaching individuals and businesses that have historically had limited interaction with formal insurance services. Easier access to product information and support could help reduce some of the barriers associated with understanding and purchasing insurance.
Digital transformation can also enable insurers to serve customers beyond conventional office hours. An AI-powered assistant can provide automated responses without requiring customers to wait for an available service representative, potentially improving accessibility for routine enquiries.
Nevertheless, AI adoption must be accompanied by appropriate safeguards. Insurance companies handle sensitive personal and financial information, making data security, privacy, accuracy and responsible use of automated systems important considerations. The technology must complement rather than undermine the trust that remains central to the insurance relationship.
Cornerstone says it intends to expand CiCi’s Voicebot capabilities as customer adoption grows. Additional insurance products and customer-service journeys are expected to be incorporated into the system over time, potentially transforming CiCi from a tool supporting selected processes into a broader digital interface for interacting with the insurer.
The next stage will therefore be determined by adoption, reliability and the company’s ability to integrate the technology into its wider customer-service ecosystem. If customers find the voice interface convenient and effective, its expansion could provide Cornerstone with an additional competitive advantage in an increasingly digital insurance market.
For the wider industry, Cornerstone’s initiative demonstrates how artificial intelligence is moving beyond experimentation and into practical customer-service applications. The combination of conversational AI and voice technology could increasingly become part of how insurers communicate with policyholders, explain products and provide support.
As Cornerstone continues to expand CiCi, the launch of the Voicebot signals a broader shift in the Nigerian insurance industry: technology is no longer being used only to automate back-office processes but is increasingly becoming part of the customer relationship itself. The success of the initiative will ultimately depend on whether it delivers its central promise of making insurance simpler, faster and more accessible while maintaining the accuracy, security and human support customers require.
