Abuja (National Planning Commission Report) – The Department for International Development (DFID) has pledged to support Nigeria to achieve success in the implementation of the National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (NIIMP).
The Director-General of the DFID Country Programmes, Joy Hutcheon made this promise in Abuja on Monday October 20, 2014 when she led her team on a courtesy visit to the Minister of National Planning, Abubakar Sulaiman. She noted that NIIMP is Nigeria’s 30-year blueprint for accelerated infrastructure development in the country from 2014 – 2043.
Joy Hutcheon also pledged that the DFID will partner with the NPC in monitoring projects embarked upon by the DFID, in order to avoid duplication as well as ensure that the programmes align with Nigeria’s national priorities. According to her, the DFID and the National Planning Commission are expected to meet soon to work out ways of working together regarding the support expected from the DFID.
While reacting to the DFID’s request for the country’s priorities and plans for the forthcoming 2015 general elections, the Minister of National Planning said that the country requires massive sensitization for electorates; adding that the Commission will partner with NGOs in terms to ensure civility amongst voters. He expressed confidence that the management of the Independent National Electoral Commission will conduct credible elections in Nigeria, identifying logistics, capacity building and technical enhancement as critical areas needing support.
Abubakar Sulaiman charged Nigerians to concern themselves with consolidating on the gains of being the largest economy in Africa and not to promote elections hinged on religious sentiments.
