United States President Donald Trump signed four executive orders on Monday, including one barring transgender individuals from enlisting and serving openly in the military.
Another order targets diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the armed forces.
The order on transgender military service, titled “Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness,” reinstates a policy from Trump’s first term in office.

This new directive reverses an earlier order by then-President Joe Biden, which allowed transgender individuals to enlist and permitted enlisted service members to receive coverage for transition-related medical care.
“It is the policy of the United States Government to establish high standards for troop readiness, lethality, cohesion, honesty, humility, uniformity, and integrity,” the order states.
It further claims that accommodating individuals with gender dysphoria and adapting to shifting pronoun usage or pronouns that do not align with a person’s sex is inconsistent with these goals.
While the order bars new transgender enlistments, it does not call for the immediate removal of transgender service members currently serving, suggesting a phased approach to its implementation.
This directive comes less than a week after Trump signed another executive order barring transgender women from being housed in female federal prisons, further cementing his administration’s stance on transgender-related policies.
The orders are expected to spark significant debate and opposition from human rights groups and advocates who argue that they undermine the principles of equality and inclusion in the military and beyond.
As implementation begins, these policies are likely to face legal challenges and scrutiny both domestically and internationally.
