The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has taken a significant step by granting emergency measures against Israel in a genocide case initiated by South Africa.
However, the court stopped short of ordering Israel to suspend its military campaign in Gaza.
In its ruling, the ICJ mandated Israel to “ensure with immediate effect that its military does not commit any acts” that could violate the Genocide Convention.

The court emphasized the urgency of implementing provisional measures, citing the serious risk of further deterioration in the situation in Gaza.
The case stemmed from South Africa’s plea to the court to issue “provisional measures” compelling Israel to halt its military operations in Gaza.
South Africa argued that such measures were necessary to prevent additional severe and irreparable harm to the rights of the Palestinian people.
The ICJ’s decision to grant emergency measures against Israel marks a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings, reflecting the gravity of the allegations and the urgency of the situation in Gaza.
This ruling underscores the court’s role in addressing complex international disputes and upholding the principles of international law.
