Senators from Nigeria’s South-South geopolitical zone have declared their support for the Tax Reform Bills submitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing their importance in boosting national revenue and promoting economic stability.
The lawmakers, under the South-South Senators’ Forum, issued a statement on Thursday through the Forum’s Chairman, Senator Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa West).
They pledged to undertake a thorough review of the bills to ensure they align with national interests while safeguarding the well-being of the South-South region.
The Forum also called on South-South governors to collaborate with lawmakers to refine the bills for the benefit of the region and the country at large.
Representing the states of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Edo, Cross River, Delta, and Rivers, the Senators passed a vote of confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio, commending his leadership in steering the Senate to fulfill its constitutional duties.
The Forum urged Nigerians to avoid injecting regional, ethnic, or tribal sentiments into the discourse surrounding the bills, advocating instead for robust dialogue and inclusive consultations in the legislative process.
The communiqué, signed by 15 other Senators, reaffirmed the lawmakers’ commitment to advancing a legislative agenda that promotes peace, prosperity, and progress for the nation while addressing the specific needs of the South-South region.
