A goal in each half from Mohamed Ahmed and Abdulfatah Al Agha proved vital for Egyptian side, Wadi Degla to beat AS Douanes of Togo on Saturday in Cairo.
The Cairo-based club playing in their first international game at home have now booked their place at the round of 16 courtesy 3-2 on aggregate, where they are due to face Malian side, Djoliba.
Playing in an empty Air Defence Stadium on the outskirts of Cairo, the homers broke the deadlock against the run of play capitalizing on a blunder by the AS Douanes defence. On 20 minutes, Saladin Said squared to Ahmed who fired into the net for the opener.
Wadi Degla were superior in possession and were gifted with several chances to double the lead at the expense of their visitors, who struggled to weave their way through the hosts backline.
On 37 minutes, Ethiopia-import fumbled with the best chance of the first half, after being put through by Mohamed Ahmed, but he shot wide with only goalkeeper Koukoute Essoazina to beat.
Two minutes later, Ahmed was unlucky to see his goalbound shot missing narrowly with the AS Douanes goalie left sprawling.
Just as the visitors were warming themselves into the game, Wadi Degla doubled the lead on 55 minutes through Al Agha from close range.
In added-on time, Said was unlucky yet again firing wide with the yawning net at his mercy.
