
The first round first leg matches of the 2014 Orange CAF Confederation Cup at the weekend saw wins for likes of AS Kigali, ASEC Mimosas, CARA, How Mine, SuperSport United, Warri Wolves, Don Bosco, CS Constantine , Ebusua Dwarfs, El-Jadida , CA Bizertin and Medeama
Zimbabwean club side How Mine were the highest scores after beating visiting Seychelles side St Michel 5-1 in Bulawayo. The gold miners’ Kuda Musharu scored a brace to take his tally in the competition to five (5). Zimbabwean side got the other goals from Thembani Masuku, Morris Kadzora and Menard Mupera and striker Jacquot Fenosoa scored St Michel’s consolation and in so doing took his tally to three goals in as many matches in the competition so far.
Senegalese striker Mame Niang started the day equal on three goals and at the top of the scoring chart with Kuda Musharu but the lanky SuperSport United did not score this time round as his side won 2-0 against AFC Leopards of Kenya in Pretoria. Goals from David Mathebula and a late second from substitute Bennett Chenene ensured Mantsantsansa take a healthy led to Nairobi for the weekend’s return.
Congolese side CARA won 1-0 against Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia) as did Rwandan side AS Kigali who beat Sudanese outfit Al Ahly Shandy by the same score line. Algerian side CS Constantine and Tunisian side CA Bizertin won 1-0 away from home against Liberia’s Red Lions and Angola’s Desportivo Huila respectively . Among the sides winning away were 1998 Champions League winners, ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast who beat CO Bamako of mali 2-0. Goals from Boua Koffi Davy from the penalty spot kick and Koffi Foba Steven leave the Malians with a tall order when they visit Abidjan at the weekend. Moroccans El- Jadida will take a commanding 2-0 lead back home after two goals from Ayoub Nanah produced a win over Gambian telecommunications company club Gamtel. Eric Kabulo also scored a brace to help Don Bosco to come from behind and beat Mali’s Djoliba FC from 2-1 in Lubumbashi.
Warri Wolves from Nigeria upset their Cameroonian hosts, Union Doula 3-2 to increase their chances of reaching the second round of the competition. Musa Najare put the Nigerians in front but Doula equalized from Patrick Ngoula’s goal. Wolves’ guardian Okiemute Odah then saved a Djengue Moundi penalty kick only for the Nigerians to regain the lead through Oghenekaro Etebo. The 1979 Champions League winners restored parity for the second time through a header from Ngansop Mangaptche. But the drama was far from over and the Nigerians snatched victory thanks to a thunderous drive from Ibenegbu Ikechukwu.
Nigeria’s other club in the same competition Bayelsa United held Congolese side Kondzo to a brave 0-0 draw away in Congo. No Nigerian club has won this CAF Confederation Cup in this format started in 2004. The closest was in 2005 when Dolphin FC reached the final by lost to FAR Rabat of Morocco. Rabat.
