The newly published MediaX Index Nigeria reveals that news platforms are steadily enhancing their presence on social media through consistent content delivery, active audience engagement, and strategic efforts to expand their digital communities.
Compiled using Facebook engagement metrics for May 2025, the Index reflects a broader shift towards more interactive and participatory models of news dissemination.
Several outlets foster engagement by prompting comments, encouraging shares, and facilitating real-time discussions.
This trend marks a clear departure from traditional one-way broadcasting, signalling a move towards more collaborative digital spaces where audiences are actively involved in the conversation.
According to Gerrit Davids, MD of Gerom Media, who compiled the Index, “The overall trend shows a commitment to more strategic social media use.”
“Recognition in key engagement areas highlights the importance of building meaningful connections and maintaining an active, responsive presence online,” said Davids.
The next Index, based on June-November 2025, will be released in December 2025, and news outlets are encouraged to up their social media game to become eligible for the eventual MediaX Awards.
