Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, says his administration is teaching the people of the State how to create wealth and sustain a good livelihood for themselves rather than depending on handouts. Governor Amaechi said this during the distribution of cottage, micro, small and medium enterprises equipment by the State Ministry of Commerce and Industry at Delta Hotels in Port Harcourt. Represented by his deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, the State Chief Executive stated “teach a man how to fish and you feed him for life. adding that the APC Government is not gathering people to dash them money. We are gathering people to give them equipment with which to generate wealth.
With these equipment we’ll generate wealth today, tomorrow and several years to come. In fact for those who are diligent, from this machine you will get today, you will buy a second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and so on”. The Governor urged them to be diligent and trust in God, praising the ingenuity of the State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Chuma Chinye, noting that “one thing is for government to release money to go and empower people, another thing is for the empowerment to really happen. One thing is for government to appoint a commissioner for Commerce and Industry, another thing is for the commissioner to know what to do to assist the people,” adding that this “shows a man who is thinking out of the box. It is his ingenuity that is going to make some of you today benefit from this empowerment programme”. Earlier, Mr. Chinye, thanked Governor Amaechi and his deputy, Engr. Ikuru, for their support, noting that the empowerment programme is one in a series designed by the Governor for Rivers people as his administration draws to a close, stressing that it is aimed at touching the lives of the very poor.
The Governor of Rivers State is doing this to teach people how to fish, the equipment here range from facilities to print face-caps, T-shirts, to make fertilizer, ice-cube machines and other things that cottage industries utilize. ‘‘As we begin to wind up as a government this is one in the series of empowerment programmes the Governor has designed to reach out to the very poor in our communities,” he stated.
